New School Nursing Scholarship Available In 2004 from NASN
(Scholarship Program Initiated in Honor of an Outstanding School Nurse)
Specific Application Guidelines to be available at www.nasn.org.
NASN is proud to announce, beginning in calendar year 2004, the initiation of a new scholarship program dedicated to
helping recognize continuing education as a priority among school nurses. This scholarship, which will be awarded on an
annual basis, is dedicated to a special school nurse who has for many years, been untiring in her efforts to make
continuing education a priority.
Jeanne Kiefner began over ten years ago serving as the NASN representative to the American Healthcare Institute (AHI).
When she arrived, it was a great match, and the beginning of a very successful partnership. Jeanne takes her
responsibilities very seriously. The AHI conferences have continued to grow over the following years, complementing
NASN’s annual conference in that they offer a program in sites distant from the annual conference. This affords more
school nurses the opportunity to attend a school nurse conference.
In her role as program chair person, Ms. Kiefner seeks out new talent for speakers, identifying content experts who
have a great deal of knowledge and clinical wisdom to share with school nurses. Her intuition serves her well.
Jeanne Kiefner knows school nursing. Her goal is straightforward: Provide quality conference speakers so that the school
nurse can in turn provide quality care for children.
Stephen Winter, President of AHI, states that “Jeanne has done an outstanding job each and every year, and her personal
commitment to being sure that things run smoothly, and that school nurses walk away with something of lasting value that
they can apply in their practices, has truly been admirable.” He further added that, “We simply cannot say enough
good things about this hard-working and very nice woman, and the contribution she has made toward making these meetings
successful.”
The scholarship, funded annually by AHI, will formally be named, "The NASN-AHI Scholarship” and will be in an
amount up to one thousand (1,000) dollars. This amount will cover tuition for one annual regional AHI meeting and
pre-symposium meeting, all food functions, travel, lodging, and a daily stipend to cover meals. Specific guidelines
for applying for the scholarship will be determined jointly by the NASN and AHI Boards of Directors and will be
announced at the beginning of November 2003.
