Volunteer Opportunities

Regards to all retired school nurses who have cared for our children.

North Shore Elder Services in Danvers is an Area Agency on Aging. Our team of specialists aim to make life easier for elders and those who care for them. We offer information, support and solutions. The work of North Shore Elder Services is supported and dependent on those willing to give of their time to help homebound, chronically ill or disabled elders receive the care they need to make it possible for them to remain independent in their own homes. Retired nurses would make great volunteers in all areas, but especially as Medical Appointment Escorts, and Ombudsman -- Nursing Home Resident Representatives. Please post the following Volunteer Opportunities for your retired nurses.

Friendly Visitor ~ visit lonely and isolated elders, providing friendship and contact with their communities. May provide transportation for personal errands or social outings.

Food shopping ~ Pick up an elder’s food order while doing your own shopping and deliver the order to the elder.

Health Benefits Counselor (SHINE) ~ provide free, confidential and unbiased information regarding health insurance options.

Medical Appointment Escort ~ Transport an elder to a medical appointment and assist the elder in asking appropriate questions of the medical provider. Record the information received and share it with the elder and caregiver.

Money Manager ~ help elders who are having difficulty managing household finances, writing checks and balancing the checkbook.

Ombudsman – Nursing Home Resident Representative ~ receives, investigates and resolves complaints of residents in long-term care facilities in order that they can live with dignity and respect.

Telephone reassurance ~ call an elder on a regularly scheduled basis to check for safety and health status and to be a regular friendly contact.

Transportation ~ provide door-to-door transportation to social and medical appointments and return home using the volunteer’s own vehicle.

Yard work ~ provide seasonal and/or ongoing yard maintenance such as raking leaves, shoveling snow, and spring or fall clean up.

Other ~ open to other possibilities or suggestions.

Long Term Care Insurance

With the publication of Your Options for Financing Long-Term Care: A Massachusetts Guide by the Massachusetts Division of Insurance, many school nurses are considering taking advantage of the protection long-term care insurance offers. This guide provides current information about the various types of long-term care services now available in Massachusetts and offers explanations about some of the responsible financial planning strategies you may use. You can start to plan to protect yourself and your assets from the astronomical costs of long-term care. Detailed information from the guide will appear serially on this MSNO web site. In the meantime, you may order the entire publication by telephoning the Massachusetts Division of Insurance in Boston at 1-617-521-7770 or Springfield 1-413-785-5526.

The current Massachusetts laws governing standards for long-term care insurance providers and consumer protection are included in the publication Massachusetts Division of Insurance 211 CMR 65.00 Long-Term Care Insurance. A copy of the laws may be requested from the telephone numbers above.
