NASN Announces New Research Networking Listserve
    July 11, 2009

Due to widespread interest from members for research networking, NASN has expanded the Doctoral and Master's Student's List to the NASN Research Discussion List.

The list is for NASN members and provides a network for school nurses interested in research, including school health office nurses, supervisors, university and non-profit agency researchers, Doctoral and Masters students. MDPH Needs to Hear from School Nurses Regarding the Acceleration of the Implementation Date to Fall 2010, for the New School Immunization Requirements.
    September 14, 2009

MDPH had originally proposed fall 2011 as the initiation date for expansion of the immunization requirements. The proposed new requirements are as follows:
    • 2 doses of measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine for all students entering kindergarten and 7th grade and college
    • 2 doses of varicella vaccine for all students entering kindergarten and 7th grade and college
    • 1 dose of tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) vaccine for all students entering 7th grade and college
    • Revisions to definitions for alternative documentation of immunity for measles, mumps, rubella and varicella

The Public Health Council (PHC) wants to accelerate the implementation date to the fall of 2010 from the originally planned date of fall 2011. They also want input regarding the expansion of the immunization requirements to include other vaccines.

MSNO does not support the acceleration of the implementation date for the new requirements to the fall of 2010. The extensive time and resources dedicated to the preparedness and prevention concerning the novel H1N1 flu, has created new burdens and challenges for school nurses and primary care providers. An implementation date of the fall of 2010 is not feasible or sufficient time to notify parents of the new immunization requirements, to allow students’ access to the required immunizations, and to prevent exclusion from school due to non compliance with immunization requirements. MSNO requests that the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) resumes the original target date for implementation of the new required immunizations to be the fall of 2011 in order for the successful achievement of this important amendment to promote students’ health.

MSNO does not support an expansion of the immunization requirements to include additional antigens at the current time. MSNO supports implementation of the proposed new immunization requirements be applicable to the varicella, measles, mumps and rubella (MMR), and the tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) vaccines and be effective the fall of 2011.

School nurses are asked to provide feed back on these two questions:
      • Question #1: Whether or not the implementation date for the new requirements should be delayed until 2011 as originally proposed?
      • Question #2: Whether or not there should be expansion of the immunization requirements to include additional antigens at the current time.

Email your testimony to the following address:
Reg.Testimony@state.ma.us and also cc Susan Lett on the email at susan.lett@state.ma.us. All submissions must include the sender’s full name and address. The Department will post all electronic testimony that complies with these instructions on its website. Parties who are unable to submit electronic testimony should mail submissions to LouAnn Stanton, Office of the General Counsel, Department of Public Health, 250 Washington Street, Boston, MA 02108. All testimony must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. on September 30, 2009.

    Annie McKay Commemorative Plaque Ceremony
    August 25, 2009

    ANNIE MCKAY 1867-1944
    Boston's First School Nurse

Annie McKay was Massachusetts’ First School Nurse in 1905. Her home is located at 1521 Washington Street, South Boston.

A special Commemorative Plaque Ceremony honoring her memory was held in South Boston on August 25, 1009 and attended by 50 people. August 25th was declared Annie McKay Day in Boston per Mayor Menino. The South End Historical Society is including the building with the plaque in their tours.

    Commerative Plaque Reads:
This building was the home in 1905 of Annie McKay, Boston’s pioneering first school nurse. Because of the era's high rate of absenteeism from school, the Boston School Committee in 1905, in an experimental and privately funded program with the instructive district nurse association, appointed Annie McKay, a trained nurse, to supplement the work of physicians. She was assigned three schools in the South End: The Quincy, Way Street and Andrews. This program was judged such an overwhelming success in improving student health and attendance that the state passed legislation in 1907 mandating school health services throughout Massachusetts.

Update: Massachusetts School Nurse Research Network (MASNRN) News

To Learn More About This Network,

The Massachusetts School Nurse Research Network (MASNRN) has been awarded its first grant. It is the Research Grant from the National Association of School Nurses, which was awarded to Marie DeSisto, RN, MSN as the Principal Investigator at the NASN Awards Celebration during the Conference in Washington, DC. The research project has recruited 5 towns to participate in the project including Springfield, Braintree, Waltham, and Newton. The research proposal is currently undergoing review by the IRB Committee. The MASNRN project will involve improving care for students with Asthma.

    MASNRN Mission Statement

MASNRN is a practice based research network comprised of a representative, collaborative group of professional school nurses, nurse academicians, and other interested parties for whom school health is a priority. Its members believe that students need and deserve high quality nursing and health care to help attain their full academic potential. This requires that school nursing embrace evidence-based practice. MASNRN conducts research and uses translational research to improve the student health outcomes and the efficacy and efficiency of School Nursing care.

    MASNRN Description

MASNRN is a practice-based research network. It began as a collaborative effort of three distinct entities: a professional organization—the Massachusetts School Nurses Organization (MSNO), a state agency—the Massachusetts Department of Public Health’s School Health Unit (MA-DPH-SHU), and a university school of nursing—the Boston College William F. Connell School of Nursing (BCSON). MASNRN began in 2004 and is governed by a Board of 10 representatives appointed from each of the three consortium agencies. An Advisory Board of community members provides input regarding identifying priority research areas, expanding the nexus of primary care activities across disciplines and practice sites, and determining effective strategies for research dissemination. MASNRN members are drawn from the 1,100 nurses of the 103 ESHS districts described above. It is uniquely positioned to develop and implement a school nursing research agenda using a research network approach to investigate problems common across schools.

    School Nurses

MASNRN is recruiting school nurses to join the MASNRN Network. School nurses who are interested in research and improving school nursing practice are welcome! We estimate that belonging to the Network will not involve more than 1-2 hours per week. Nurses do not have to be involved in every project. You have the option of participating in a study, or opting out due to commitments, interest etc. There is flexibility.

In order to join the network you must complete a biosketch (similar to a Curriculum Vitae) and complete an online program on Human Subjects Research that was developed by the National Institute for Health. The Human Subjects Research program takes approximately 3 hours and you do not have to complete it in one sitting. Upon completion of the program you will take a quiz, and you will get a certificate of completion (you can use this for PDP’s). For information about joining the MASNRN Network please email Gail Lopez at maschoolresearch@yahoo.com.
